Sam twirled his pen through his fingers and leaned his head gently against his free hand. He was supposed to be doing homework, but Sam was drawing a blank. The blinds were down, but the sun seemed to peek in through the small spaces the shade failed to cover. Sam sighed as he felt the small pinpoints of light hit his face and arms. He didn't feel well. He was tired. It wasn't a normal tired, it was exhaustion. He could feel it in his muscles, his head, his arms, everywhere. His eyes hurt and it took every ounce of effort to stay awake. Sam tapped his fingers against the table rapidly, and quickly scribbled something down. He set down the pen, folded his arms, and placed his head atop his arms. He felt the sweet burn of his eyelids as he closed his eyes....
Sam lifted his head, suddenly startled. All though he wasn't cold, he could feel the absence of heat on his body. He stood up and lifted the blinds. The sun had sunk behind the mountains hours ago. It was dark. How long had Sam slept? He suddenly felt panicked. Sam looked around, but everything was in order. He breathed, and listened as his heartbeat slowed to normal speed. Between being Alpha, managing in a pack, and patrolling Forks and La Push, Sam was at his limit. He forced himself to breath again. He was anxious that he had missed something through the hours he had slept. Sam threw his body around to face the front room. He was suddenly rigid, and took a defensive stance. Someone had come into the house.
It was only Jake.
"Jake..." Sam breathed, lowering his stance, and relaxing his shoulders.
"Is everything okay?" Jacob asked. Sam nodded lightly and sat himself gingerly back in the chair. Jake walked over cautiously and sat down in a chair opposite of Sam. Sam had invited the pack over for dinner, but Jacob was an hour early.
"Sorry, Jake..." Sam breathed, "I guess I'm just...stressed. I haven't slept in a few days..." Sam looked out the window. The sky was black, and some stars began to twinkle along the edge of the mountains where the sun had set. They glowed dimly like soft dying candles, like worlds flickering as if fireflies in the night sky. The silence irked the both of them, and was extremely awkward. Sam didn't like looking weak and frazzled. He thought for a moment, before speaking.
"Let's take a run..." Sam said, a small smirk on his face. Sam and Jacob were out the door in under thirty seconds. Sam could feel the powerful heat glide through his veins and into his stomach and heart as he went wolf. His powerful paws broke the earth, tearing up roots and flicking small flecks of dirt. He felt his legs beg for more speed, as his torso was thrust forwards.
Running was what he did, it was his life. He loved the way he felt when he was that of a wolf. Jacob came to a halt, and Sam realized that they were at the cliffs. Sam was panting hard, and was relieved to see that Jake was too. He shook his huge head and sat down, rather ungracefully. He felt his legs burn with muscular pain, like a hot fire whose flames had been extinguished by water. It was a good feeling, a stinging relief. His front paws twitched slightly as the blood coursed through his veins, desperately trying to feed oxygen into his heart. He could feel his skin sweating as his body tried to cool him down.
The sea was loud. Huge waves bombarded the shore, their white crests slamming into the jagged cliffs where the pack always jumped. Sam's breath slowed, and he felt his heart return to normal pace, falling into rhythm with the soft hum of the sea. The waves were so powerful, that Sam could feel the ground vibrate underneath him from the angry waves. He looked to Jake, who seemed at peace with himself. Sam sighed loudly and lowered his head onto his front paws. It was here that he felt the world belonged to him. There was nothing against him but the wind and roaring waters. It was here that Sam belonged, amongst the night birds, amongst his family, amongst the sea.
